Jenison Junior High 7th grader Avery Beard recently learned she won the Judge’s Choice Award in the 14th annual Write Michigan Contest.
More than 1,000 writers from across the state entered the competition. Winners were chosen by public voting and Beard won $500 for her piece entitled “The Ink and the Pencil.”

Beard’s English teacher at Rosewood last year, Kari Reynolds, helped her fall in love with writing and inspired her to share her writing with a larger audience. Reynolds suggested the contest and Beard took the initiative to apply.

She received an email late last month from Beard announcing that she won. Breard thanked her for helping her last year learn a lot about writing.

“I am so excited for her,” Reynolds said. “She’s a kid that wants more."
