After four of his wrestlers qualified for the state finals last weekend, Jenison Wrestling Coach David Johnson received even more good news: he was named Regional Coach of the Year.
Johnson, a physical education teacher at Jenison High School, said he appreciated the honor from his fellow coaches and that his talented, hard-working wrestlers made his job much easier.
The 2007 Jenison graduate won 199 matches during his high school wrestling career and captured an individual wrestling state championship in 2006. He then went on to wrestle at the University of Michigan.
Athletic Director Michael Johnston said Johnson embodies all the qualities of a great coach and leader of young people.
“His dedication to the wrestling program is second to none and is shown in the accomplishments of the student athletes in his program,” Johnston said. “These accomplishments include multiple individual district champions, individual regional champions, state qualifiers, state placers, and the first girls wrestling conference champion in Jenison history.”
Beyond his accomplishments, Johnson also deeply cares about all the student athletes in his program and pushes them to reach their full potential.
“Jenison Athletics is proud of Coach Johnson and congratulates him on the well-deserved Regional Coach of the Year honors,” Johnston said.
